Composition, also known as Typesetting, is the core business of Westchester Publishing Services, as it both serves clients directly and also supports the work of our in-house Editorial Services division. We are dedicated to providing the publishing community with on-time delivery, high quality, and very competitive prices, using our state-of-the-art capabilities.

Our composition-typesetting expertise extends from simple monographs to highly complex reference titles, technical manuals, and 4-color cookbooks and textbooks. We also typeset and page highly illustrated juvenile titles and both academic and technical journals.

Customer Service

Each publisher is assigned an in-house customer service representative (CSR) who becomes an extension of your organization. The CSR follows all assigned projects through the entire process, assuring timely communication and accurate scheduling. These staff members are located in our Danbury facility and are experienced professionals who have specific training in composition specifications and style sheets.

Art and Graphics

Westchester is skilled in handling the illustration graphic programs for the books and journals we are assigned. Illustrations may be supplied in a wide variety of formats, and we can handle corrections to existing artwork, rendering (as needed and requested) of new illustrations, scanning, sizing, and adjusting. We are proficient in a number of illustration software packages, and we ensure that your illustrations will be created or presented in the most effective manner.  4-color services are available.

Typesetting Platforms

Westchester Publishing Services utilizes a number of industry-accepted typesetting platforms to help us work effectively with projects encompassing a wide spectrum of subject matter and manuscript preparation formats. We keep current in the latest version of Adobe® InDesign®, PTC Arbortext® (3B2) (a batch pagination platform), or LaTeX. This allows us to provide a complete XML workflow or to provide “back end” or legacy XML when needed.

Interior design services are available through our on-staff designer or through a pool of professional freelance designers whom we have worked with over the years. Whether we are adjusting an existing design, matching the design of a published book, or preparing an original design, our clients are always pleased with the results achieved by our design services.

XML Services

If there is a need to provide XML as an ancillary format, we do so either utilizing publisher-specific or off-the-shelf DTDs. Complete XML workflows are offered, and we will be happy to discuss this process with you in detail. Pre-Edit services using a customized template and tag set are available.

We provide universal eBook formatting that can be translated for common reading devices, such as:

eBook files are created directly from the composition application files to maintain the highest level of accuracy. Finished files are validated for all primary formats and tested on multiple eReader devices. Integrating the eBook creation process into the composition workflow provides benefits in quality, time, and cost. Additional formats including fixed layout ePub, KF8, ePib, Page Perfect, and customized PDF products may be generated for titles typeset by Westchester or from previous projects in your archives.
