Editorial Project Management
Westchester Publishing Services is the premier service provider of Editorial Project Management, also known as production editing, for publishers in the U.S. market. We provide project management services to book publishers in the following markets: Adult and young adult trade, university presses, publishers of cookbooks and 4-color how-to hobby books, as well as policy groups (aka think tanks), professional, and legal publishers. Essentially any type of book or publication is something we can handle with expertise and care.
Westchester offers two Editorial Project Management service options:
- Domestic Project Management
- India Direct Project Management
Domestic Editorial Project Management
Our Domestic (U.S.-based) Editorial Project Management service started in the 1990s. Our Director of Editorial Services, Susan Baker, has over 30 years’ experience overseeing editorial project management groups. In addition, we have the largest full-time staff of expert project managers/production editors of any non-publisher entity in the U.S. Our Domestic Editorial Project Management team handles more than 500 books and publications each year. Each client has at least one dedicated project manager (or more depending on number of projects), ensuring your project manager has a thorough and consistent understanding of your preferred publication workflows, styles, and all project specs.
An essential element of our Domestic Editorial Project Management service is Copyediting, perhaps the most important element. Therefore, over the nearly 30-year history of our Domestic Editorial Project Management service, we have assembled a network of over 400 freelance copyeditors. This network has the expertise to copyedit the simplest to the most complex publication content. Due to the consistent volume of projects we are able to provide many of these freelance copyeditors, we are able to obtain attractive copyediting prices which would not otherwise be possible.
Once the initial publication manuscript has been completed, publishers rely on our Domestic Project Management service. As a result, we handle every step in the publication workflow. Starting from editorial project management, through copyediting, indexing and proofreading if elected, through to the composition (typesetting) of the project. Therefore, publishers know they can count on us for high quality, accurate, on-time projects every single time.
How We Work
Each new book received by Westchester for editorial project management is assigned to one of our experienced, U.S.-based production editors, with oversight by the production manager. The production editor handles all communications with the publisher contact as well as with the author(s) and freelancers. Working with the author, they are integral in selecting the proper copy editors, proofreaders, and indexers for the publication. Most importantly, the production editor is responsible for reviewing the copyedited manuscript and ascertaining that the specifications are complete. This production editor is responsible for all stages of production and for maintaining the schedule. Our U.S.-based editorial services team of editors are located in our Danbury, CT headquarters.
