What is the process for translating my book?
If you are trying to decide whether you want to translate your book, you may be wondering what this process involves. Westchester’s model consists of a few key steps:
- We use closed-model machine language models, a form of non-generative AI, to translate your manuscript into the appropriate localized text. Machine translation is a common tool used by translators, much as authors use spellcheck or indexers use software to generate lists as the basis for an index. Using tools like this helps tee up a starting point for a human translator.
- A skilled translator then reviews and adjusts that machine-translated text. This can include localization, decisions about word choice, and tone.
- A language-specialist then copyedits the translated manuscript
- Next, we move into page production to typeset the manuscript using InDesign to create a professional, polished PDF for printing via Lightning Source.
- We then have a language specialist proofread the title to ensure the translation is accurately presented in the printer file.
- Any final adjustments from the proofreader – and your own feedback on the layout – are applied, and we will generate your final printer PDF and ePub file, and provide them to you to upload to IngramSpark for printing and distribution.
