Westchester Wrap-up: Summer 2019

K12

October 11, 2019

by Nicole Tomassi, Marketing & Conference Manager

In the summer months, the pace typically slows down, allowing an opportunity to relax and enjoy the longer, warmer days summertime offers up. While all of us at Westchester made sure to take some time to spend with friends and family, we were still working hard to make sure all of our publishers’ projects were moving along through the pre-press stages. Here’s a quick wrap-up of what we did this past summer:

Collaborative partnership

Dropbox is one of the members of Westchester’s Partner Network, and their Dropbox Business suite of products helps us to remain connected internally as well as with our freelance resources and client publishers to flow project assets to each other within a secure framework. Check out this video that Dropbox produced over the summer that shows how Dropbox applications help support Westchester’s development initiatives, including our Client Portal.

Westchester profiled in Publishers Weekly

In early August, Westchester Publishing Services was featured in the Publishers Weekly annual Digital Solutions in India issue. In the article, Chief Revenue Officer, Tyler M. Carey, explains how the company is prepared for continued growth during the next decade, and reflects on the significant milestone of 50 years of serving publishers’ pre-press requirements, along with reaching the fifth anniversary of being a 100% employee-owned company.

Meet Dilip Chacko

Shortly before the Digital Solutions in India article was published, I had the opportunity to speak at length with Dilip Chacko, Founder and Managing Director of our wholly-owned composition facility in Chennai, India. It was an extremely informative discussion encompassing Dilip’s career, his guiding principles, and how his focus on providing high quality applies to client projects as well as the employees who work on them.

Client Portal Update

In the spring edition of the Westchester Wrap-up, we shared how the Client Portal had been shortlisted for the Stationers’ Company Innovation in Excellence Award. Not content to rest on our laurels (or nominations), we are continually adding capabilities to the Client Portal to better serve the requirements our clients have. Last month, we conducted a webinar demonstrating several of the helpful features that make publisher workflows more efficient throughout the pre-press production process.

UK conferences

While July and August are quieter months from a working standpoint, the pace tends to move faster with September’s arrival. Tim Davies, Managing Director of Westchester Publishing Services UK, was particularly busy last month meeting with publishing industry professionals at the ALPSP (The Association of Learned and Professional Society Publishers) Conference, and the IPG (Independent Publishers Guild) Autumn Conference. Prior to those conferences, Tim shared some helpful insights for independent publishers in this IPG podcast.

Next Generation Science Standards

If you haven’t been in the classroom for a decade or more, you might be surprised at how much more proficient students are required to be when it comes to understanding scientific concepts. Our STEM Content Director, Dave Bailis, explains how a more effective science curriculum is being implemented around the country to help prepare students for a world that is more reliant on science and technology than in previous generations.

In the Community

Earlier this year, our Westchester K-12 division implemented a program where each month one member of the team selects a project to fund from the thousands that are submitted to DonorsChoose.org by public school teachers. These projects are often for schools where the majority of students are from low-income communities that aren’t able to access much-needed classroom resources through traditional funding avenues. During the summer, STEM Content Director, Dave Bailis, and Director of Creative Services, Mark DaGrossa, each had the opportunity to fulfill a teacher request that was meaningful to them.

Meet with us this fall (and beyond)!

We’re attending and exhibiting at several conferences during the next few months, including Frankfurt Book Fair next week, FutureBook in London this November, and the SIIA Education Business Forum taking place this December in New York City. If you will be attending any of these events, let’s catch up! Make an appointment to connect with us, and be sure to visit our Conferences and Events page where we will be regularly adding information about the conferences Westchester will be attending or exhibiting at in 2020.

You don’t need to wait for a conference to speak with our knowledgeable staff about how our fifty years of experience in providing editorial, composition, and design services can help you produce quality publications while condensing schedules and trimming pre-press expenses. Contact us today to learn how Westchester’s consultative approach can benefit your projects.

Thank you for thinking of us. We appreciate the outreach of so many of our clients, business partners, and friends today who inquired about the safety of our K-12 team in our Dayton office. Westchester is saddened by the senseless tragedies that took place over this weekend by our office. As many of you know, our K-12 office is located in The Oregon District in Dayton and we are incredibly thankful that our team is safe. We deeply grieve for all who are affected. Please keep our Dayton neighbors in your thoughts as we all begin to heal.

Our offices are open and we remain dedicated to your projects, and we appreciate you keeping our Dayton neighbors in your thoughts as the city begins the healing process.

We’re halfway through our 50th year in business, and Westchester Publishing Services has continued to be very productive in several areas! Here are a few of the highlights from this past spring:

The Westchester K-12 Team Welcomes Walter

Walter Henderson, Jr., Senior Supervising Editor, English Language Training In April the Westchester K-12 Product Development team grew when Walter Henderson, Jr., joined the team as Senior Supervising Editor for ELT (English Language Training). Walter has an impressive professional background as a classroom instructor both in the United States and overseas, as well as working with academic institutions and publishers to develop suitable course materials for English Language Learners (ELL). Having Walter and his extensive professional network as a part of Westchester K-12 allows us to provide educational, academic, and professional publishers with a wide range of product offerings, including bilingual and translation content to support the specific needs of English Language Learners in educational and business settings.

Westchester Publishing Services UK profiled

Coverage about Westchester’s 50th anniversary continued into the spring, with a comprehensive profile in The Bookseller (may require login to read) about our company and the factors that brought us to further expand the business into the UK market, under the guidance of Managing Director of Westchester UK, Tim Davies. More coverage about Westchester’s anniversary can be found in these articles.

K-12 Catalog

Westchester K-12 Publishing Services Catalog 2019This spring the Westchester K-12 art and design team produced a comprehensive catalog that showcases the capabilities and services the Product Development team is able to provide educational and ed-tech publishers for new curriculum content or product updates. Client Portal Nominated for Innovation Award

Stationers Company Shortlisted Innovation Excellence Awards 2019In May, we were excited to learn that our Client Portal had been nominated for the Stationers’ Company 2019 Innovation Excellence Awards in the Customer Experience category. To receive this recognition from the Stationers’ Company – a London-based guild with a more than 600-year history of serving members of the publishing and media industries – was a particularly special acknowledgment of the work our technology team has invested into building a project management platform that serves the specific requirements of publishers. This article provides additional information about the newest features we’ve added to the Client Portal to make it even more user-friendly.

British Book Awards

Westchester was proud to be the sponsor for the Academic, Education, and Professional Publisher of the Year category at this year’s British Book Awards which took place in London on May 13.  The awards program is also known as The Nibbies, and draws a veritable Who’s Who of the British publishing industry to recognize the successes of authors and publishers in the previous year.  Additional information about the Books of the Year shortlists and winners is available here.

Association of University Presses

Tom Hartmann and Susan Baker at the 2019 AUP Conference, DetroitIn mid-June, members of Westchester’s sales and editorial teams traveled to Detroit to attend and exhibit at the Association of University Presses annual conference. We always enjoy meeting with our clients at conferences to discuss the latest developments that are having an impact within the industry, and sharing with publishers who may not be familiar with our product offerings the many ways that Westchester’s services can help them to improve their workflows.

In the Community

In the last edition of the Westchester Wrap-up, I shared with you that the Westchester K-12 team had begun an initiative to make a positive difference one classroom at a time. Learn more about the projects that Anne Riccio and Laura Rolfe selected, and how you can help a classroom in your community.

Summer Reading

If you’re looking for a new title or two to add to your reading list, the Westchester staff have some interesting recommendations that you probably won’t find everywhere else. Check out the variety of fiction and non-fiction titles that we’re planning to read this summer, and let us know what you think!

We’ll be on the road at a few key conferences during the remainder of 2019, and planning is well underway for the trade shows Westchester will be attending and exhibiting at next year. The Conferences and Events page will continue to be updated as we confirm our commitments, so check back regularly to see where you can meet with us in person.

You can also keep up with the latest news from Westchester by following us on LinkedIn, and subscribing to our blogs (Westchester and Westchester K-12). Contact us any time to learn how our editorial, typesetting, design, and project management services can help you reduce production time and expense in your publication program.

Enjoy the rest of your summer!
Best,

Nicole Tomassi

Compiled by Nicole Tomassi, Marketing and Conference Manager

In what has become an enjoyable tradition here at Westchester, I’ve asked my colleagues to tell about a book that they’re looking forward to reading during the (supposedly) more relaxing days of summer. Whether it’s a title that’s practically hot off the press or one that’s been waiting patiently for its turn in the reader’s hand, I’m pleased to once again present you with a wide array of stories true and fictional to choose from. Click on the book cover images to find out more information about these titles, and locate an independent bookstore near you that has it for sale. Happy Summer Reading!

The Fragility of GoodnessThe Fragility of Goodness: Luck and Ethics in Greek Tragedy and Philosophy, by Martha Nussbaum

Publisher: Cambridge University Press

Why I can’t wait to read this book: Martha Nussbaum uses close readings of ancient Greek texts to investigate how luck and context determine whether someone or some action is good or ethical and examines whether such virtues are dependent on favorable factors outside of a person’s control (e.g. is goodness circumstantial–also known as the problem of “moral luck”).

Steven BarchikoSelected by: Steve Barichko, Production Editor

The Book of LifeThe Book of Life: A Novel (All Souls Trilogy #3), by Deborah Harkness

Publisher: Penguin Books

Why I can’t wait to read this book: I’ve read the first book in the series, A Discovery of Witches, and watched the live action TV show. I’m currently reading the second book and I’m as in love with it as the first one. Both books grabbed my attention right away and I couldn’t put them down. I can’t wait to read the last one to see, with everything that Diana and Matthew have been through if they prevail.  Good mix of historical knowledge, suspense, supernatural elements and romance all in one!

Selected by: Kenia Gonzalez, Customer Service Representative

Storytelling with DataStorytelling with Data: A Data Visualization Guide for Business Professionals, by Cole Nussbaumer Knaflic

Publisher: Wiley

Why I can’t wait to read this book: As the head of sales for Westchester, I have to present a lot of data to different departments for resource planning, financial forecasts, and more. Additionally, over the past five years, Westchester’s presence in the policy group space has grown geometrically as we edit, design, and typeset hundreds of white papers, books, and journals every year, including many that have complex infographics and 4-color charts. My initial flip through Cole Nussbaumer Knaflic’s title, reflecting what she learned during her time at Google and other large companies, shows it to be a great guide to understanding visual data, as well as a primer on how to better make your point using data visualization. With luck, by the end of the summer, forecast and resource planning meetings I lead will result in less snores and more questions about why I used so much color ink from the scanner/printer next to our journals department.

Tyler M. CareySelected by: Tyler M. Carey, Chief Revenue Officer

An Absolutely Remarkable ThingAn Absolutely Remarkable Thing, by Hank Green

Publisher: Dutton

Why I can’t wait to read this book: I discovered Hank Green when he started NerdCon: Stories a few years ago—a convention in Minneapolis that celebrated all things story. I’ve followed his vlog and various projects ever since. Picking up his debut novel was a no-brainer. Can’t wait to read!

Selected by: Meg Overman, Senior Editor, K-12 Publishing Services

Wabi-Sabi for ArtistsWabi-Sabi for Artists, Designers, Poets & Philosophers, by Leonard Koeen

Publisher: Imperfect Publishing

Why I can’t wait to read this book: The Japanese aesthetic theory of wabi-sabi holds that there is profound beauty in imperfection—in objects with cracks or chips or signs of wear or repair. Of course, there’s more to it than that, and Leonard Koren distills the subject and offers guidance for artists and designers. I’ve been interested in the subject for years and finally want to finish this classic.

Selected by: Tom V. Hartmann, Business Development Manager Tom V. Hartmann

The Night TigerThe Night Tiger, by Yangsze Choo

Publisher: Flatiron Books (a Westchester client publisher)

Why I can’t wait to read this book: This has been sitting on my shelf since it came out in February, and I can’t wait to finally dive into it. I was initially skeptical, but the magical element pulled me in out of pure curiosity. In The Night Tiger, two characters trying to find their place in society are brought together because of a severed finger while men in their district inexplicably turn into tigers.

I love that this sounds complicated yet whimsical—sounds like the perfect summer read to me! Christina Kinsella

Selected by: Christina Kinsella, Production Editor

Lost DaytonLost Dayton, by Andrew Walsh

Publisher: The History Press

Why I can’t wait to read this book: True confession: I’ve started the first chapter or two of this book already and am hooked. Walsh is a local historian and professor who does an excellent job painting the landscape of forgotten neighborhoods. His prose is informational, yet breezy and engaging. His work helps shed light on how the city became what it is now and what it’s left behind.

Kevin J. Gray

Selected by: Kevin J. Gray, Managing Director, K-12 Publishing Services

MontaukMontauk, by Nicola Harrison

Publisher: St. Martin’s Press (a Westchester client publisher)

Why I can’t wait to read this book: I’m looking forward to reading this debut novel about a woman who spends the summer of 1938 at the famous Montauk Manor – a real and still operational resort – rubbing elbows with other high-society wives, while their husbands are conducting business in New York City, a hundred miles to the west and a world away. I grew up on “The Island” and though this story is set 80 years in the past, I’m curious to see what details the British born and bred author tucks into the story that are authentic to Long Island in general, and the East End in particular. Westchester is proud to be celebrating 50 years of providing publishers with quality pre-press services. The ways that content can be delivered and accessed are more numerous now than at any other time since Gutenberg invented the printing press, but our primary mission continues to be ensuring that we consistently deliver excellent customer service and finished files to our clients on every project we handle. Read on to see some of the significant moments that began our golden anniversary year:

Publishers Weekly Westchester Publishing Services 50th Anniversary coverWestchester turns 50!

Westchester began operations in 1969, and during the past 50 years the company has grown and evolved into what is currently the only U.S. based firm whose exclusive business has always been as a provider of pre-press services for publishers. We shared the celebratory news in the February 18 edition of Publishers Weekly, which also included this letter from President and CEO, Paul J. Crecca.

Macmillan Publishers U.S. HeadquartersMacmillan U.S. extends contract with Westchester

In late March, after reviewing a number of options for handling their book composition requirements, Macmillan Publishers signed a new agreement with Westchester to continue providing U.S. managed book composition services for virtually all of their U.S. trade titles. We’re pleased that this long-term partnership which began nearly 30 years ago in 1992, will continue to grow stronger in the years to come.

Tim Davies, Tyler M. Carey and Dennis PistoneLondon Book Fair

Members of the Westchester management team from the United States and United Kingdom returned to the Olympia this past March for London Book Fair. It was a busy three days of appointments with clients, prospective customers, and publishing industry friends. London Book Fair also provided the ideal backdrop to raise a celebratory glass to 50 years of success. Take a minute to enjoy some of the highlights in this installment of Travels with Tyler.

International Studies Association Conference

The month of March had a double meaning for our international ambassador of publishing services, a/k/a Chief Revenue Officer, Tyler M. Carey. He received a few more stamps in his passport as he made his way from London Book Fair, to Toronto, Ontario, for the 60th Annual International Studies Association convention. Catch up on highlights of his Canadian trip in this bonus edition of Travels with Tyler.

SXSW EDU 2019

In March, Westchester K-12’s Kevin J. Gray and Tim Cross attended the SXSW EDU conference in Austin, TX. Between appointments with clients and prospective customers, they had the opportunity to listen to sessions led by thought leaders and innovators in the education field. Read Kevin’s conference summary.to learn some of the conference highlights.

A positive ripple effect

A presenting sponsor of the SXSW EDU conference this year was Chevron, who is also a corporate partner of DonorsChoose.org, an online platform where public school teachers are able to submit funding requests for their classroom projects. Find out how receiving a gift card to DonorsChoose.org at the conference became the catalyst for a new initiative being led by our K-12 team.

Unfamiliar becomes familiar with award-winning

Westchester K-12 is now officially an award-winning team! The graphic novel Unfamiliar, an original work for middle grade readers that was conceptualized and created by our colleagues in Dayton, recently received an award from the Dayton area chapter of the American Advertising Federation. Take a look at this video, for a behind-the-scenes peek at some of the different steps involved in creating a graphic novel.
