Westchester 2018 Year in Review

Publishers Weekly

February 7, 2019

by Nicole Tomassi, Marketing & Conference Manager

Many year in review pieces come out in December, which means anything that happens the last few weeks of the year runs the risk of getting overlooked. That’s why I decided it might be better to wait a bit before sharing some of Westchester’s 2018 highlights with you:

Client Portal Enhancements

We continue to add capabilities to the Client Portal, our project management system that helps put more productivity and time back in the hands of our clients. Take a brief tour of the different ways the Client Portal gives you visibility to your projects while they’re with Westchester.

Prepress services whitepaper

Published and distributed by Publishers Weekly, Westchester sponsored this comprehensive report that provides in-depth analysis on why using the right third-party vendor to take care of editorial and composition services for your publication projects not only makes fiscal sense, but also frees up valuable resources within your company to focus on growing your business.

Westchester K-12 opens an office

2018 began with the opening of our K-12 division’s office in Dayton, Ohio. It’s an ideal central base for our team, given its proximity to several of our K-12 publisher clients who have offices in the Midwest region, combined with the large pool of educational publishing talent that calls the area home.

Westchester UK opens an office

After careful analysis and the strong reception we received in the market, we officially opened the doors to our Westchester UK office in Stratford upon Avon in September  – an apropos location given that it’s the birthplace of the Bard himself. Tim Davies, who was appointed as our UK Managing Director, has signed on a number of new clients who have been very pleased with the quality and the cost savings they can achieve when we provide editorial and typesetting services on their projects.

Expanded partnership with Dropbox

Our partnership with Dropbox continued to grow stronger throughout 2018. We collaborated on a case study about how we use Dropbox within our workflow processes with clients, and have integrated the Dropbox API into our Client Portal to further improve the UX, and deliver efficiencies for clients using this project management tool. We also had a discussion with George Baier to better understand how Dropbox envisions the ways media and technology will continue to intersect.

K-12 Familiarity

In the October newsletter I shared with you that our Dayton-based K-12 Publishing Services division was working on some special projects in front of the camera. One of the video projects the team focused on is about a graphic novel titled Unfamiliar. Take a look behind the scenes to see how our content and art teams created this graphic novel that addresses the themes of diversity and inclusivity in a format that students can engage with and see themselves in.

We built a new website!

The Dayton team was very busy this fall with a number of projects, including the updated and expanded Westchester K-12 website. Providing a complete overview of all the capabilities our K-12 team can execute on for educational publishers, it’s a great way to learn more about Westchester K-12. Click the image on the right to take a tour, and let us know what you think about it,

Our following grows

The number of people following us on LinkedIn nearly doubled in 2018. It’s a great way to stay in the know about what’s happening at Westchester, along with our website, blog, and other social media channels. If you’re not already connecting with us through at least one of these outlets, you should check them out so you can always be up to date!

On the road again…

The Westchester team was very busy in 2018, attending conferences on both sides of the Atlantic, including London Book Fair, Book Expo, ILA (International Literacy Association) NCTM (National Council of Teachers of Math), AUP (Association of University Publishers), IPG (Independent Publishers Guild), Frankfurt Book Fair, and many more. Be sure to visit our Conferences & Events page to see where we will be this year, and make an appointment to meet with us.

This is a very special year for Westchester Publishing Services, as 2019 marks 50 years since the company was founded. While some of the faces and much of the technology has changed over the past half-century, the one constant is the pride every employee has in delivering excellence on every job they work on for every client. We thank everyone who has been a part of this amazing journey, and are looking forward to celebrating this special milestone throughout the year!

by Nicole Tomassi, Marketing and Conference Manager

The 4th Annual Publishers Weekly Star Watch event took place in New York City on September 12, 2018. Co-hosted by Publishers Weekly and Frankfurt Buchmesse – producers of the Frankfurt Book Fair, it shines a spotlight on the contributions and innovations of people making an exceptional impact in the US or Canadian book publishing industry.

This year the nominating committee received nearly 300 individual submissions that were carefully considered and narrowed down to a field of 40 individuals receiving PW Star Watch Honoree status. We were thrilled to learn our colleague, Westchester K-12 Publishing Services Managing Director, Kevin J. Gray, was one of the finalists. The achievements and qualities Kevin displays that were integral to his selection were profiled in the September 3, 2018 edition of Publishers Weekly.

I recently had the opportunity to ask Kevin about the significance of this recognition for him, and he shared these thoughts:

“It’s incredibly exciting to be nominated as a Publishers Weekly Star Watch top honoree. This recognition from Publishers Weekly is an affirmation of the dedicated focus on excellence that the managers and staff of Westchester Publishing Services K-12 demonstrate daily. Our success would not be possible without their contributions. I’m grateful to be part of a company that understands the needs of a changing market and that empowers its leaders to grow the business in directions that anticipate and respond to the needs of publishers and educators.”

Congratulations to Kevin and the entire Westchester K-12 team on earning this achievement!

by Nicole Tomassi, Marketing and Conference Manager

Maybe it sped by due to how busy we are here at Westchester, but spring has bloomed into summer. Join me for a quick rewind of some of the key events that occurred during the months of April, May, and June at Westchester Publishing Services:

London Book Fair 2018, and Guildhall

Several members of our management team were in attendance at the 47th Annual London Book Fair in April. The Book Fair provided us with the opportunity to affirm our business growth in the UK, formally launching Westchester Publishing Services UK, with Managing Director, Tim Davies. It was a productive event for us, and our preparations are already underway to return next March.

While in London, our Chief Revenue Officer, Tyler M. Carey was bestowed the prestigious honor of the Freedom of the City of London by the Stationers’ Guild. A unique benefit granted by this recognition is that he can now legally drive a flock of sheep across London Bridge. If you don’t believe me, you can read more about it in this blog post.

An alphabet soup of conferences

In addition to London Book Fair, Westchester staff attended several conferences and trade shows this spring throughout the U.S., including NCTM(National Council for Teachers of Mathematics), CSE (Council of Science Editors), SSP (Society for Scholarly Publishing), BEA (BookExpo),  SIIA(Software and Information Industry Association), AUP (Association of University Presses), and ISTE (International Society for Technology in Education). We catch our breath in July and August but as you’ll see from our Conferences page, the pace picks up again in September with Publishers Weekly StarWatch, IPG Autumn Conference, and The Bookseller Children’s Conference.

Publishers Weekly Whitepaper, and Dropbox Partnership

Westchester sponsored production on a whitepaper that was published and distributed by Publishers Weekly in April, with in-depth analysis about how publishers of various sizes and types are able to effectively scale their programs through the use of prepress vendors. Following on this successful venture, Dropbox shared news last month about the work they do with companies in the media and entertainment vertical, including publishers and vendors. We also had an informative Q&A session with George Baier IV, from Dropbox, which provided a useful perspective on this topic.

Westchester continues to grow

By providing quality products and services to our valued clients, our business has grown and flourished over the past several years. To further ensure accounts continue to receive the high level of support we pride ourselves on, we recently welcomed Keri Goldberg to our sales and marketing team in the role of Business Development Manager. Current and prospective clients alike will find Keri’s background in publishing to be helpful as they consider prepress solutions for their particular needs. Westchester is also looking for editorial and production talent as various areas of the company expand, visit our Careers page for more information.

Westchester K-12 Summit

Our K-12 Services team held their annual summit at their Dayton, Ohio headquarters to strategize on how to build on the successes of the past year to achieve continued forward momentum. Having the entire team – who are located throughout the country – come together in one location was beneficial for all involved. It gave our staff an opportunity to discuss the student books, teacher’s guides, assessments, leveled readers, and other projects that the teams have been working on. It also allowed them to explore the expanded capacity and additional service offerings they are now able to provide clients as a result of hiring additional staff earlier in the year.

Summer Reading

Reading isn’t a seasonal pastime, but it seems especially enjoyable to read the latest bestseller or a book from the stack on your nightstand during the somewhat more carefree days of summer. My colleagues and I shared a few of the books we plan to read this summer, along with recommended reading lists in this recent blog post, in case you’re searching for ideas. Happy reading, and enjoy the rest of your summer!

Keep up with the latest happenings at Westchester!

Westchester Publishing Services a Gold Sponsor of PW Star Watch 2017

By Guest Blogger – Nicole Tomassi

Three years ago, in an effort to bring well-deserved attention to people on the rise in the publishing industry, Publishers Weekly, working together with the Frankfurt Book Fair, created PW Star Watch.

This event seeks to identify individuals who have brought a fresh, innovative approach to the work they are doing in publishing, whether it’s production, bookselling, or any other non-executive position you can think of within publishing’s vast realm, honor their contributions, and provide them with the mentorship which will help them achieve further success within the industry.

Each year, the PW Star Watch Executive Jury selects forty semi-finalists from all the nominations received. From within this talented group, five finalists are chosen, with the name of the one who is the year’s Superstar being revealed at the PW Star Watch event. The newly named Superstar not only gets to bask in the glow of recognition from among their industry peers but is also awarded an all-expenses-paid trip to the Frankfurt Book Fair, which takes place in October.

Westchester Publishing Services realizes the importance of contributions from people who are newer to the industry. The ideas and concepts these people share are vital for the continued innovation and growth which are integral to the future viability of all aspects of the industry. We are very proud to be a Gold Sponsor of the Third Annual Publishers Weekly Star Watch and hope you can join us on Wednesday, September 6 in New York City when the next Super Star is recognized for their accomplishments.

Annual supplement focuses on digital solutions for publishers

Westchester recently had the opportunity to participate once again in Publishers Weekly’s Digital Solutions in India annual supplement.  This annual issue helps the publishing industry understand the options available for editorial, composition, and digital services – often from vendors based in India.

As the only U.S. employee-owned company in the market focused exclusively on editorial and production services, Westchester is proud of the work we do in both North America and India. Publishers Weekly’s Digital Solutions in India annual supplement covered many aspects of our business, including leading with our perspectives on recent changes in the print and digital space, writing about new units and offerings at Westchester including our Client Portal , highlighting some of our recent, complex projects , and featuring us in their digital marketplace section.

Westchester’s year of expansion

Westchester has undergone significant growth since our appearance in last year’s Digital Solutions supplement, including expansions in our Scholarly publishing, Domestic Full Service,  and India Direct Full Service businesses, the acquisition of Kinetic Publishing Services,  our move into K-12 publishing services, and the launch of our Client Portal.  Contact Us to learn more about our offerings, and explore the various ways we can help you affordably scale your publications program.
